Drugs such as barbiturate drugs, the medication used to treat anxiety and depression, are prohibited in Australia.
Barbiturants such as benzodiazepines and valium are not allowed.
However, there are a range of other drugs, such as antihistamines, that are permitted to be prescribed to people with mental health problems such as anxiety, mood disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services said the Department “does not comment on pending regulatory developments”.
The spokesperson also said the government was “reviewing” drug safety regulations, including the legalisation of cannabis.
